Campaign map at start of battleHaving received reports that the French cavalry screen has withdrawn from the bridge over the river Saale, General Langeron has ordered 1st Russian corps to cross the river Saale and attack Halle
As Marshal Victor approaches Halle he is informed of a large body of Cossacks approaching the bridge along the Lutzen road. He orders his corps to march through the town and hold the bridge at all costs.
